Detention and Retention Tanks

Detention tanks are man-made structures that serve the purpose of temporarily retaining stormwater runoff. The runoff is directed to these basins through storm drains, where it is collected and stored until the volume of water subsides. After that, the accumulated stormwater is released at a controlled pace into adjacent waterways. This approach to stormwater management plays a vital role in mitigating the risk of flooding in our neighbourhoods and safeguarding the coastal regions from erosion.

The terms detention tank and retention tank are often used interchangeably in the context of stormwater management systems. However, it is essential to note that these are two distinct systems that serve different purposes. Although both systems aim to regulate the amount of stormwater to prevent flooding and erosion, the key difference lies in their storage methods. Detention tanks release the collected runoff gradually until the basin is entirely drained. In contrast, retention tanks store water permanently. The water collected in retention tanks can be utilised for various purposes such as irrigation of gardens or flushing of toilets.

Traditional above ground systems typically consist of excavated pits that resemble a pond and collect stormwater. Although above ground systems have been a reliable solution for managing stormwater for many years, underground systems are better suited to maximise the developable land available for construction projects. This flexibility makes underground detention systems an excellent option for applications with restricted spatial conditions. Most underground detention systems are installed beneath hardscape surfaces like parking lots, athletic fields, lawns, and other similar areas.
